The Creature; Her Wish

Dani finally has the fire going and as she is adding more wood, Patrick appears behind her. They sit together in silence; watching the flames dance around the wood and the black smoke reach for the sky.

"I never got the chance to ask you how you were doing," Patrick says. He looks at her face, glowing from the light and warm from the heat.

"I...I could be better," She responds. "Life here is a bit hard, you know," She pauses and looks back at him. "I mean, getting a job is almost impossible, even for Spike and I'm low on money. I don't think we have enough for food next week, and winter is coming just around the corner." She turns to the fire again.

"Traveling is pretty hard as well. I'm never exactly sure if I'm going the right way sometimes," He laughs. "It just feels like I'm almost there, at the end of my journey. I can sense it." Patrick gazes down at his hands as he shuffles them in his lap.

"How is it, out there?" Dani asks as she stares into the fire, imagining a life of the outdoors. "Is it fun?"

Patrick nods. "It's the most amazing thing I've ever done. To see the sun rise behind the mountains or to set by the sea. The clouds, animals, scenery, everything. I'll never regret it." He smiles softly.

"I just wish..." Dani stops as Patrick interrupts her.

"Where is Lilia?" Patrick asks as his suddenly realizes the absence of her mother. Dani tries to fight back the tears. She could feel them coming, and she didn't want them to.

"Dinner," Spike says as the table is set, for three, once again. Surprisingly how useful that third chair has been.

The two eventually get up and head for the table for the last meal of the day.

The three eat in silence. Crickets from outside sing their beautiful songs in perfect harmony, while the tension inside the house is broken and hard. All eyes are focused on the task at hand; taking the food / beverage, and getting it into the mouth. Dani eats very little before leaving for bed.

The fire flickers with all its might as it is running low on fuel. Patrick and Spike are left alone in the dark with only the sound of Dani breathing and the flames crackling. Spike speaks.

"She's dead."

Patrick looks up startled by him suddenly talking. "Whom, my I ask?" Spike glances over at Dani's room. Then stares at Patrick straight in the eye.

"Lilia."

Patrick is taken aback. Appalled even. He had never thought such a thing. "W-when?" he stutters. "When did it happen?"

"We had her funeral a few days ago," Spike responds, his voice unshaken. Patrick looks down at his hands that now lie in his lap.

"I, I didn't know, I'm sorry." Spike scowls at him.

"You shouldn't apologize to me."

Patrick gazes around the room suspiciously then turns back to Spike and eases towards him. "Look, I can fix that, I can bring her back," he whispers. This angers Spike as he stands and takes his food to a counter. "I can find the creature and tell him that's what I want; I can make it so that she won't ever die; I can bring back everyone; even her fath-"

"How dare you," Spike coughs and turns to face him, eyes blaring blue in the small amount of light. "How dare you speak of her deceased mother and talk wicken of bringing her back." He steps closer in an assaulting manner. "And damn you for speaking of her father."

The conversation ends and Spike then leaves the house in fury. Patrick stands for a moment before placing his dishes by Spikes'. He then finds an extra pillow and blanket and makes a tiny but comfortable looking bed by the dying flame in hopes of sleep.

Dani lies awake in her bed, still trying to absorb the entire conversation she had just heard. A way to bring mother back? To bring everyone back? Anything I wanted?

Spike sits outside the house. He has always loved Dani's house. Even if it was small, it's view was incredible. She is luckily placed by the forest. Because of the lack of light in town, and the cloudless night, Spike easily gazed into space. An unknown world; hundreds of thousands of unknown worlds, waiting to be discovered. The full moon shown brightly as it lights the sky. There is an ominous feeling; like something is about to happen. He just doesn't know what. And that's what bothers him.
